WebAug 22, 2014 · Make sure your punch is slightly smaller than the hole. I found it easier to stand the slide on end, with striker side up. Insert punch in that hole and push down, not in (should feel the spring tension). While applying downward pressure, slide the back plate off. The striker can then be easily removed. Usually end up getting a new cleaning rod once or twice a year as they will bend and/or break. Some of the cleaning rod handles will be used for pistols. Upon cleaning and reassembly, I pushed the slide back in order to install the retaining pin. I think I pushed it too far back and now the whole slide is stuck open. (not all the way open, but most of the way).
